History
Did you know ?
Once upon a time, on this very place you stand in Cedar Grove, North Carolina, a married couple lived during a time where trials and tribulations were many. Slavery was an every day word. Where black people were not treated as human, but as property.
But this married couple endured through this adversity with strength and dignity.
The husband was a hard working man whose focus was to own - and not to be owned.
His wife, a strong, talented black woman stood with her husband every step of the way. No complaints. No Fear. Just Faith.
His wife, most importantly, was a God fearing woman - whatever it took for her to get to her place of worship. She would walk miles and miles to attend a church - a white church - where she had to sit or stand in the balcony
barely hearing the message - as long as she was in God's presence.
As you can imagine, the walk began to weather her, but she continued to walk, because that's how strong her faith was.
And, then one day, with much compassion, her husband decided to build her a place where she could worship - no more long walks.
To say the least, the wife was very grateful to her husband.
This couple believed in ownership, believed in family, and most importantly, believed in God.
And by the way, the husband's name was Richard Corbett and his wife's name was Tesch.
And the church that he built for her is this very church. WHITE OAK!
